I started practising in 1981 before moving to Oxford, where in 1996 I set up Berman Guedes Stretton Architects with Roger Stretton. Buildings shown here are a selection of award-winning projects for which I was director and lead designer. Work commissioned by 10 Oxford colleges and other universities included new and historic conservation projects.
Pembroke College Oxford: Five new buildings contain an auditorium, seminar rooms, café and student rooms around two new quads, linked to the old college by a bridge which over-sailed Oxford’s ancient City wall.
Wolfson College Oxford: Extension to Powell and Moya’s listed 1966 buildings include an auditorium, seminar rooms, café and expanded library. These followed the success of two earlier residential blocks.
The Queens’ College Oxford: The space between two 18th Cent. stone garden walls was chosen to enclose a new all timber auditorium and associated facilities.
The Queens’ College Oxford: A new dining room for senior members was created in the narrow gap between two Grade 1 Listed 18th Cent buildings, with access from adjacent buildings by a glass link which also contained a glass wheelchair lift. The commission included designing the furniture.
